florence has a quiet dignity about it, secure and smug in the knowledge that it is home to some of the most beautiful works of art in the world.  i was admiring the plaster statues in statue room at the  Accademia Galleria when I noticed a blind girl hesitating before a statue.  she was wearing a pair of white cotton gloves so that she could touch the artwork freely.  after observing her hesitation i walked over to her and asked her if she would like to look at the statues.  she said yes, but couldn’t speak english very well (she was japanese).  so together we “looked” at several beautiful reclining pieces.  it was a very moving experience…
