making pies

homemade pie, the ultimate comfort food.  my german grandmother used to make oodles of desserts but her apple pies were always just right.  to her a piece of pie was actually the whole pie!  of course, 3 or 4 cups of coffee and a few hours later that “piece” really did disappear!

old fashioned that i am, i took pride in my homemade pumpkin pies.  i would choose a nice medium-sized pumpkin, bake it, puree it, strain it and make a half-dozen pies, thanks to martha stewart’s recipe.  to my discouragement, they just weren’t turning out the way i liked.  all that work and they were a pale version of what they should have been.  but ta da!  i have discovered the secret (you can’t repeat this….) tinned pumpkin puree. just follow the recipe on the label, liberally add your favourite libation (mine is bourbon) and it makes a perfect pumpkin pie.  (i love to eat it for breakfast!) especially yummy on a cold, rainy day.
